Open Access Learning Resources

Education organizations are increasingly offering high quality, open access learning resources online.  Selecting open access resources for your course can provide the following benefits:Reduce the cost of required resources for students;Save instructors time by using content that is already developed;Provide a source of digital and/or interactive content to engage students in learning that is easy to integrate in your Blackboard course;Simplify access to current learning resources for students…See More

APA Style at CityU

City University of Seattle's library hosts a guide to APA style for faculty and student use.  The guide includes an overview of document formatting and reference citation guidelines.  You can also find links to resources with additional information, such as Diana Hacker's APA style website, and to free tools like Knightcite that students can use to format their reference citations. The faculty who helped create this guide, approved by CityU's Academic Affairs Council, made a few modifications…See More

You (may have) bought a book for the CityU library!

The CityU library has been piloting a "patron driven acquisition" model of purchasing e-books through the Ebrary database. Our library blog post from April 19, 2012, gives more information about what we are doing and how you might have unknowingly helped to build the library's collection of relevant e-books. MyCitywise Technology Resources

Did you know that CityU maintains a website full of training and productivity resources for faculty and staff on its intranet? It's called MyCitywise and should be accessible to anyone with staff or faculty login credentials.

Welcome CityU faculty from your curriculum and faculty development "concierge"

Lots of faculty join this social space during the month of November when they learn of it through the Fall Faculty Development conference. We almost "held" the conference in here, but the DNA of the site doesn't lend itself to large discussions between people new to the platform. It's great for small ones though, and you can start one at any time. You can also try out blogging with the only audience being other CityU faculty. Our tone as we "speak" to each other here should be professional,…

How to add your story or resource to this site

What if you visited this Ning site one day, and every other member page contained a story? You have a story that is going to make a difference to another faculty member. That story describing a tool, scenario or learning activity you used in a course becomes the content of this site when you type it into a Blog Post.

Everyone who has joined this site can add content to it. There are two easy ways. One way is to click on the Quick Add drop-down box over in the right navigation area. The… Continue

REFLECTION WRITING

Per Sue's suggestion, here is a "teaching tool" that has served me well...

For my on-the-ground classes I begin each session with REFLECTION WRITING. I pose a question or prompt some thoughts for each student to ponder and respond to personally (in writing) for the first 5-10 minutes of our time together. This gets them focused, ends the socializing, and starts cognitive activity! Sometimes I move directly from the individuals' reflections to small or large group discussions, or save the… Continue

Using Social Media for Multidimensional Purposes and Designs

After a wonderful summer in the use of Inquiry Methods as a Successful Learning Experience, several students produced work that I also observed with our IT Management students this fall. The use of Social Media to design, integrate, and share ideas is nothing new. However, the successful integration of these tools for improved collaboration, and student performance has had mixed results. I found it interesting that due to our open culture in exploring innovative practices at CityU, we have… Continue
